Obituary

HOPEWELL JUNCTION – Joseph Lavelle, 86, passed away on September 18, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in New York City on October 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Patrick and Anna (McLaughlin) Lavelle. He proudly served in the 7th T Regimen of the US Army during the Korean War. Joseph had retired from the maintenance department at Greenhaven Correctional Facility where he worked for 15 years. He had also retired from the A & P in Wappingers Falls where he was the store manager for 25 years and previously worked for Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company.

Joseph had been a parishioner at St. Columba Church for over 50 years where he served as Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Most Holy Stigmata Fraternity of the Franciscan Order. He enjoyed volunteering his time with the sick and handicapped.

An avid Yankees fan, Joseph also enjoyed fishing.

Joseph was predeceased by his loving wife, Joan Lavelle in 2005. He is survived by his children, Joan Ramirez and her husband Francisco of Poughkeepsie and Robert Lavelle of Hopewell Junction; his grandson, Daniel Lavelle and Emily Cordell; his great-grandchildren, Joseph and Jenna Lavelle; his brothers and their wives, John and Helen Lavelle and Robert and Kris Lavelle; and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was also predeceased by his sister, Patricia Fallon.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
