Joseph Michael Mackey passed away on July 18, 2026 at Hudson Valley Hospice House. He was 94. Born on January 24, 1932 in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Michael and Alice (Foley) Mackey. Joseph graduated from St. Anselm Catholic School in the Bronx, where he made many lifelong friends. He was also a 1950 graduate of Cardinal Hayes H.S. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy. His career was spent as an Iron Worker for the Local 46 Metallic Lathers Union in NYC. On April 25, 1998, he married his beloved wife Patricia (Yane) Mackey at St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.

Joseph was a mechanical-minded, sharp-witted prankster who told the most entertaining stories and loved making people laugh. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

His Catholic Faith was an integral part of his life. He was a long standing Oblate of Saint Benedict and an active leader in the Charismatic Renewal of the Catholic Church at Our Lady of Hope Center and St. Kateri Tekakwitha communities. He was also a leader of OCIA programs to educate those called to become Catholic. He volunteered in Kairos Prison Ministry bringing teachings to inmates in many state prisons in the area. He was a lector at our Lady of Hope and St.Kateri, known for his annual Genesis reading.

Joseph loved to work in his vegetable garden, hike, swing dance, and travel the world. He was a Mason beekeeper, as well as the most avid Rangers fan there ever was!

Joseph is survived by his wife Patricia Mackey; his children: Brian Mackey (Denise), Michael Mackey (Marina), Mary Alice Thornton (John), Justine Gavagan (Kurt), Marla Dennis (Craig), Mark Gavagan (Kimberly), and Matthew Gavagan (Donna); his grandchildren: Lacey (Josh), Faye (Brian), Heather (Dean), Sean, Liam, Anton, Bryson, Michaela, Nathan, Regan, Cassidy, Sara, Grace, Audrey, Sophia, Keira, and Hanna; and his great-grandchildren: Madelyn, Rylee, Amelia, Sophia, Cooper, and Benji.

He was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth, and his granddaughter Kalie.
