Joseph M. Marshall, 78, a resident of Palm Coast, FL since 1999 and formerly of Hopewell Junction for 30 years, died on Friday, January 15, 2010.
Born in the Bronx on December 28, 1931, he was the son of the late Manuel and Ana Robinson Marshall. He attended Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx. He was a career military man and true American who proudly served his country. In May 1947 at the age of 15, Joe enlisted in the New York National Guard "Fighting 69th" Infantry Regiment and on his 17th birthday enlisted in the Army and underwent basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. In March 1949, Joe was shipped out to Germany and was assigned to the Occupation Forces in Austria with the 67th M.P. Railroad Security Company, with duty on the "Mozart Express" Military and Dependent's Train. Joe traveled between Munich, Germany and Vienna, Austria throughout the Russian Zone. In December of 1949, he was assigned to G-Company, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th "Blue Devil" Infantry Division (First all Draftee Division to go overseas in World War II). Joe was discharged on 20 June 1952 after three and a half years active duty and re-enlisted in the 69th Infantry Regiment and was discharged on 01 January 1992 as Sergeant First Class E7. He was the dining facility manager for 28 years and the highest rank he attained was First Sergeant. His Army decorations included: Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army National Guard Achievement Medal, NCO Professional Development Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal, Military Commendation Medal (twice), 35 Year Faithful Service NYS Medal, Recruiting Medal, NYS Aide to Civilian Authorities, Humane Service to NYS Medal and Long Faithful Service 69th Infantry Regiment Medal. Joe retired from his civilian job as Supply Technician for the National Guard at Camp Smith in Peekskill after 30 years in December of 1991 and from the military in January of 1992. His total years of service was 41 years and 1 month. Thank you Joe for the devotion, loyalty and many contributions you made to our country.
On September 4, 1954 at St. Roch's Church in the Bronx, Joe married Ethel Bueno Horruitiner who died on March 31, 1994. Joe and Ethel had three children: Linda LaSusa and her husband, Tom of Rhinebeck, Joseph Marshall of Hopewell Junction, William Marshall and his wife, Laura of Haverstraw and Robert Marshall of Queens; a daughter-in-law, Kim Marshall of Hopewell Junction; and his grandchildren, Adam LaSusa, Samantha Marshall and Joey Marshall. In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was also predeceased by his brother, Lewis Marshall.
Joe married his present wife Joan in December of 1998. Joan has a son, three daughters, four grandsons and a great-grandson. Joe and Joan moved to Palm Coast in January of 1999 and joined the VFW where he held the position of Budget Chairman and was the Kitchen Chairman for over two and a half years. He was currently active in the Flagler Gun and Archery Club and worked at the Indian Trails School in Palm Coast.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Family and friends will begin gathering at the funeral home on Monday at 9:00 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
