Joseph Lorenz Schappert, Jr., a resident of the Town of Fishkill since 1979, formerly of Mount Vernon, New York peacefully passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, March 18, 2012. He was 66.
Born in Mount Vernon on January 11, 1946, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Ada Matlack Schappert, Sr. After graduating from high school, Joseph was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1968 to 1971, during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge, he received an Army Commendation along with several medals including the Vietnam Service Medal with five Bronze Stars.
In 2005, Joseph retired from the U.S. Postal Service with over 35 years of dedicated service. He worked at the Mount Vernon Post Office and was later transferred to the Section Center in White Plains, where he served as Supervisor.
He was a member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill as well as the N.R.A. and Hudson Valley Sportsman Association. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and NASCAR spectator. A classic car enthusiast, Joseph spent his leisure time restoring vintage vehicles.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Carol A. Kinnally of Fishkill; his son, Michael Joseph Schappert and his wife, Kateri of Hopewell Junction; his grandsons, who adoringly referred to Joseph as their "Pop-Pop", Mikey Jr. and Carson; his sisters, Cecelia Schappert DeMicco of Bedford Corners; Marie A. Schappert and her husband Dr. Charles Schmidt of Boston, MA; and his brother, John E. Schappert and his wife, Theresa of Hamilton, VA; his father-in-law, Edward Kinnally of Orlando, FL; also his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces & nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his brother Thomas Schappert.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
