Katherine Gruber, age 93, passed away on April 26, 2023 at Norwalk Hospital. She was born in Krndija, Yugoslavia(now Croatia) on February 7, 1930 to parents Josef and Katharina (Hermann) Beinhardt.
On July 2, 1949 she married Anton Gruber in Koflach, Austria; they were married for 61 years before Anton's passing in 2010. In 1951 she emigrated to the United States with her husband and young daughters aboard the U.S.S. Hershey. They lived in Sharon, PA until moving to Manhattan and later the Woodlawn section of the Bronx. The Gruber family moved to East Fishkill in 1977.
Katherine was a proud, supportive wife and mother, she enjoyed being a homemaker and took great joy in cooking and baking for her children and grandchildren. She loved gardening and spent many days tending to her flowers, fruits and vegetables, even canning and preserving them for everyone to enjoy year-round. She was also a wonderful seamstress and would make clothing for her young daughters. Katherine would knit blankets for the entire family. She also loved to socialize and played cards including pinochle and canasta with friends while laughing and trading stories. Katherine was a parishioner at St. Columba Church and a member of the East Fishkill Senior Center.
Katherine is survived by her loving children: Helga Courtney and her husband Stephen of Ridgefield, CT, Anna Wilson and her husband Brian of Seymour TN, and Anthony Gruber of Hopewell Junction, NY; her grandchildren: Katharine Maguire and her husband Michael, Kristen Courtney, Stephen Courtney; Courtnay Milkins and her husband Jon, Brian Wilson; Maximillian and Cristian Gruber; as well as great-grandson Charles. She was predeceased by her sister Maria and is survived by her brother John and sister Hilde as well as many other loving family members and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday April 30th, 2023 from 2-6pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. 895 Route 82 Hopewell Junction, NY 12533. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday May 1st, 2023 at 10 am at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction, followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
