Kathleen Mary Louise Otis, lovingly known as Kathy, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026 in the comfort of her home bundled up with her blankets. She was born on September 2, 1964, in Mount Vernon, New York, to the late Patricia and Walter Gayz.
Kathy was a woman whose greatest joy in life was her family. She loved fiercely, completely, and without condition. She had a way of making the people she loved feel as though they were the most important person in the world. No matter what she was going through, she was always there for her family, always willing to listen, comfort, encourage, and love.
Above all else, Kathy treasured being a wife and mother. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Philip Otis, and her daughter, Katrina Otis, who was the light of her life. Their bond was something truly special. Kathy's love for her daughter never wavered, and no matter what was happening in her own life or how difficult things were she always made Katrina feel like the center of her world.
Kathy and Philip shared a love that was impossible not to notice. During her time in the nursing home, people would often ask how long the two of them had been together because the love between them simply radiated. They continued to shine with the same love and devotion that brought them together, even through the hardest of times.
She is also survived by her stepson, Joshua Otis, his wife, Kayla, and their three children, Joshua, Silas, and Thomas Otis, who brought her great joy and love.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Patricia and Walter Gayz; her brother, Walter Gayz; and her sisters, Susan Gayz and Patricia MacAnanney. Though she will be deeply missed by those who loved her here on Earth, she can now be at peace and reunited with the family who went before her and were waiting to welcome her home with open arms.
For the past four years, Kathy faced one health challenge after another with incredible strength and bravery. She fought through more than anyone should ever have to endure, always finding a reason to keep going and always putting the people she loved before herself. She was strong, she was courageous, and she never stopped loving her family.
Kathy also had a tender heart for animals and found happiness in the simple beauty around her. She loved her flowers and took great joy in looking at her garden. She loved talking with her friends and family, sharing stories, laughing, and simply being connected to the people who meant the most to her.
But if you asked Kathy what she loved most, the answer would always have been her family. Being a wife and mother was not simply a part of who she was-it was at the very heart of her.
Her love will live on in every flower she planted, every conversation she shared, every memory she created, and most of all, in the hearts of the people who were lucky enough to call her Mom, wife, Grandma, family, and friend.
Kathy may no longer be here for us to hold, but the love she gave so freely will never leave us.
Rest peacefully, Mama. You fought so hard for so long. You can finally rest now. We will carry your love with us until the day we meet again. I love you awful awful.
