Obituary

Kevin Patrick Moran, 78, an area resident since 1965 died on Friday, January 2, 2015.
Born in Brooklyn on October 30, 1936, he was the son of John and Catherine Gilbride Moran. Kevin graduated from St. Augustus Diocesan High School in Brooklyn and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from CCNY and his Master's Degree in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University. He was employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie for over 40 years, retiring as a Program Manager in 2008. During his distinguished career, Kevin received many invention achievement awards and US patents.
He held his Professional Engineering License and was an Adjunct Professor of Thermodynamics at Dutchess Community College. He was a very loved and respected teacher, and students actually looked forward to taking his engineering courses. Kevin felt the same way about his many students, and was very proud that he helped foster future engineers.
Kevin was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. Upon retirement, he enjoyed serving on the Dutchess County St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Kevin dabbled in tennis, skiing and running but his true passions were golf, driving and a good bowl of ice cream, any flavor. He also loved listening to Irish music and only the hardy or hard of hearing could listen with him until the wee hours of the morning!
In 1986, Kevin took on a new roll—he became Sarah's Pop Pop, a job that at first he thought he was much too young for, but one in which he excelled. A grandchild never left the house without Pop Pop squeezing a $20 bill in their hand and whispering 'don't tell your mom!' Pop Pop will be missed by all 9 of his beautiful grandchildren, by far his greatest legacy.
Kevin was the consummate host. He enjoyed entertaining, and was the first to give you a bear hug or a pat on the back and get you your drink of choice. He was a modest and generous person with a keen sense of humor and he loved to laugh. No one ever left his home without his departing 'Moran Family Wave' and the words, 'God Bless'.
On November 28, 1959 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brooklyn, Kevin married Mary "Pat" Donovan who survives at home. He is also survived by his 5 children, Colleen Barbarita of Manchester, NH, Mary Pat Moran of Alameda, CA, Maureen Lucas and her husband Steve of Wappingers Falls, John Moran and his partner Linda of Hyde Park, and Kevin Moran and his wife Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Caitlin Barbarita and her husband Brian Wilson, Sophie Barbarita, Sarah Allen, John, Emily and Hannah Lucas, Luke Moran, Margaret and Catherine Moran; his brother, James Moran of Croton-on-Hudson; and his sister, Grace Kastner of The Villages, FL. In addition to his parents, Kevin was predeceased by his brother, John Moran; his sister, Eileen Moran Burke; and his son-in-law, Michael Barbarita.
God Bless you, Kevin. xo
