Leo Thomas Butler, 87, an area resident for 50 years and formerly of Yonkers, NY, died on January 13, 2024, at MidHudson Regional Hospital.
Born on November 22, 1936, in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of the late Leo Joseph and Anna Joann (Rudval) Butler. On June 6, 1959, at St. Denis Church in Yonkers, Leo married the love of his life, Emilia Gaeta, who survives at home. They were married for 64 years.
Leo proudly served our county in the US Navy and the US Marine Corps. He was employed as the Aquatic Director for the City of Yonkers, and was a lifelong swim instructor, teaching both the elderly and the disabled. He coached two of his teams, the Aqua Kings and the Middies in Westchester County.
Leo was a member of the Marine Corps League in Myrtle Beach, Knights of Columbus-Beacon, NY, and the VFW. Aside from his love of golf and being an avid baseball fan of the Mets, Leo was passionate about giving back to the community. He donated his time to the Special Olympics and CYO. Leo loved to go to the airport to welcome our troops home, and volunteered at military barbecues at Camp Lejeune and with the Wounded Warrior Project. He was a parishioner of St. Columba Church. Leo and his wife enjoyed spending their summers in Myrtle Beach.
He was a man of simple tastes whose family was the world to him. Leo's life was a testament to the power of love and kindness. He was always happy and had a smile on his face.
He is also survived by his daughters and their spouses, Karen and Glenn Anderson, Jacqueline Butler-Garcia and Christopher Garcia, Donna Butler-Ricotta and Daniel Ricotta; and his grandchildren, Nicholas Anderson, and Brad and Nicole Anderson.
In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Butler, and brother, Richard Butler.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 11:30 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by entombment in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
