Obituary

Leonard (Lenny) Louis Caponigro, a Fishkill resident since 2009, formerly of Ardsley and the Bronx, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 88.

Son of the late Liberato and Mary (DiBaradino) Caponigro, he was born in Brooklyn on May 27, 1934. Lenny was a graduate of Evander Childs High School in the Bronx, and an outstanding athlete who lettered in basketball, football, baseball and swimming. Even with the adversity of contracting polio in his teens, Lenny remained optimistic, strong, and brave. He continued playing sports such as wheelchair basketball and participated in Paralympics, and later, became a scratch golfer. He remained an avid sports fan throughout his life.

On April 26, 1958, Lenny married Francine (Lombardi) Caponigro in the Bronx. Fran predeceased Lenny in 2009.

For more than 50 years, he worked for Tork, Inc. in Mount Vernon, where he began his career at an entry level position and retired as Vice President of Operations. Lenny was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.

Survivors include his son, Richard Caponigro & his wife Melodie of Round Rock, TX; his daughter, Lori Tamboia of Wingdale, NY; his son, Paul Caponigro & his wife Kristin of The Woodlands, TX; his grandchildren, Greg Caponigro, Matt Caponigro, Brad Caponigro, Jeff Tamboia, Katie Caponigro, Lia Caponigro, and Emma Caponigro; his brother, Carmine Caponigro; his sister, Jean Henry; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

In addition to his wife and parents, Lenny was also predeceased by his granddaughter, Alicia Tamboia; and his son-in-law, Bill Tamboia.

Lenny was known by his friends and family to be a loving, kind, generous, and thoughtful gentlemen who was always more concerned about the welfare of others than he was of his own. He was independent and actively assisting others to the end.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 12 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 13 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill, NY.

Lenny was a strong supporter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) after his granddaughter Alicia was killed by a drunk driver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Leonard Caponigro may be made to Team Forever Alicia, Walk Like MADD (https://www.walklikemadd.org/team/19271).
