Clifton Park – Leonard "Lenny" Sterling Phillips passed away on August 31, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. Lenny was born on July 20, 1961 in Poughkeepsie, NY to parents Leonard and Lorena (Daniels) Phillips. He was a 1980 graduate of John Jay High School in East Fishkill. On July 16, 1983 he married the love of his life Karen (Lobb) Phillips at Vassar Road Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie.
For 20 years, Lenny worked for the Wappingers Central School District's Athletic Department as a football coach for Van Wyck Junior High School and most recently for John Jay High School as a Junior Varsity Head Coach. When he wasn't busy coaching, he was watching his favorite teams, the NY Giants and the NY Mets, hanging with his dogs, and spending quality time with his beloved grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Poppa." Lenny was a movie buff, loved comics and baseball cards, American history, especially WWII and the Revolutionary War.
He didn't say much but when he did, it was impactful. He was a tough coach but earned respect and loved the game. He had a smile that was contagious and a laugh that was infectious.
Lenny is survived by his loving wife Karen Phillips; his daughters Kate Gray (Jeremy) and Ashley Bosser (Chris); his granddaughters Kendall Gray and Elsie Bosser; his grandson Phillip Gray; his sister Dawn Merryman (Andy); his mother-in-law Rose Lobb; his sisters-in-law Amy Goodman and Anna Evans; his brothers-in-law Granger Lobb and Todd Lobb; his nephews Jordan Goodman and Evan Goodman, who referred to Lenny as "Unc" and Granger (Vicky) and Tanner Lobb as well as his "nephew" Michael Natoli (Ariel) and their daughter Eliza; his nieces Jenn Hawkes (Tom), Jessie Terwilliger (Dan), Julie Ilardi (Joey), and Morgan Evans as well as Eden Lobb; and his great nieces and nephews Savannah, Thomas and Jagger Hawkes, Branson and Callie Terwilliger, and Penelope and Lincoln Ilardi, Lupe and Jorge Lobb. Lenny is also survived by his best friend and "brother" of 50 years, Vinnie Natoli and his wife Wendy. Lenny will also be missed by countless friends and the kids he coached over the years.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Leonard and Lorena Phillips, his brothers Bucky and David Evans, his father-in-law George Lobb, and his brother-in-law Rob Merryman.
