Obituary

FISHKILL - Lossie Mae Lee (Slater), 101, passed away peacefully at home on June 24, 2025. She was a resident of Fishkill since 1952.

Born on July 12th, 1923 in Statesboro, GA, Lossie was the daughter of the late Pete and Celia Slater. She attended Pokes Academy in Statesboro, GA. Growing up she enjoyed riding the horse and buggy with her father and attending basketball games. She was an extremely hard worker and loved working outside. Prior to moving to New York she would spend time on the plow and working on the farm. After moving to New York she worked at the rubber plant in Beacon, NY where she had the opportunity to construct life-saving equipment for the military. Lossie also enjoyed selling Sarah Coventry Jewelry and Home Decor products as well.

On December 1, 1939 in Statesboro, Georgia, Lossie Mae Slater married Sam Lee who she was happily married to until his passing on September 13th, 2022. In 2009 and 2019, James Miccio, the Mayor of the Village of Fishkill proclaimed December 1st as "Sam and Lossie Lee Day" in recognition of their 70th and 80th wedding anniversaries.

Lossie was an active member of the Beulah Baptist Church in Wappingers Falls, where she is affectionately known as "Mother Lee." Lossie served as usher, deaconess, and as a member of the choir. Lossie is also known for initiating the Youth Platform Ministry at Beulah Baptist Church, along with taking an active role in other church activities. Lossie loved cross stitch, gardening, and shopping. She was known for having a yard full of tulips. She also enjoyed coloring and spending time with friends and family. Lossie Mae Lee was a wonderful hardworking mother, grandmother, friend, and so much more.

In June 2025 Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino proclaimed July 12th, Lossie's Birthday as Lossie Lee Day in Dutchess County, as a reminder of the lasting legacy she will leave.

Lossie is also survived by her children, Retha Smith, Ernest Lee and his wife Barbara, Robert Lee and his wife Kathy, and Samuel Lee, Jr.; her 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 41 great-great grandchildren; and 4 great-great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, and loving husband, Lossie was also predeceased by her son, Herbert Lee; her siblings, Mattie Moffat, Jonnie Slater, Stephen "Bubba" Slater, Agnes Williams, Sarah Hilton, and Mary Saab; her sister-in-law, Catherine Owens; and her daughters-in-law, Midge Lee and Lisa Lee. As the matriarch of the family, her legacy of love will continue for many generations to come.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 30th, 2025 from 4-7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025 at 11 am at McHoul's as well, followed by burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
