Lydia (DiDomizio) Kanych, 75, formerly of Yonkers, NY, died peacefully at her home in Fishkill, NY on December 13, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.
Lydia was born in Cugnoli, Pescara in Southern Italy on July 8, 1945, daughter of the late Ilda (Chiulli) and Cesare DiDomizio. At the age of 6, Lydia immigrated to America with her family to Yonkers, NY where she resided for the majority of her life. Lydia married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, William Kanych, on January 27, 1968 and they were happily married for 52 years.
Lydia retired in 2016 from Gembrowski Accounting where she loyally worked for over 25 years. More importantly, Lydia lovingly dedicated her time and service beside her husband as Pastor’s Wife at Faith Assembly of God in Yonkers for 31 years. Her faith in Jesus Christ was crucial to her life and was immediately evident upon meeting her. People were her passion and she took great joy in the women’s prison ministry she led where she shared Jesus’ redeeming love. She was an avid prayer warrior who prayed faithfully for anyone that entered her life.
Her crowning achievement, however, was her role as Mother and Grandmother. Her family was everything to her and she loved them fiercely. She loved being a Nona and enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren, which always included a treat from Dunkin Donuts! Lydia was always found front row at all of their recitals, school performances, and sporting events as she was their number one fan and biggest cheerleader. Her family will miss her amazing Italian cooking but mostly the Sunday suppers they spent after church gathered around the table digging in to a bowl of her famous meatballs and gravy.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William Kanych; her children and their spouses, Lisa and Erik Biegun and Billy and Yvette Kanych; her grandchildren, Billy, Juliet, Leah, Faith, and Zach; her siblings and their spouses, Bianca and Tony D’Amato, Frank and Debbie DiDomizio, and Chet and Barbara DiDomizio; her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Greg and Fran Kanych and Marie Piacente; many nieces and nephews that adored her; and many cherished friends. In addition to her parents, Lydia was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Andrew Piacente.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel of the Hudson Valley located at 36 Firemans Way Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 on January 9th 2021, at 11:00am. The family will receive family and friends at the church on Saturday morning between the hours of 10:00-11:00am. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in her name can be made to Hudson Valley Hospice.
