Obituary

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NY - Mae C. Guarino, who lived in Hopewell Junction for 20 years and previously resided in New Rochelle, Harrison, and Carmel, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026 at The Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was 91.

Born on April 25, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Mae was the daughter of the late Earl and Helen (Gormley) Evensen. She was once a parishioner at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in Carmel, NY. Throughout her life, Mae had many roles, including caterer, nursing home aide, and school bus driver in Carmel before retiring. Mae was cherished by everyone she met. She loved entertaining, had a wonderful sense of humor, a creative spirit, and enjoyed drawing, knitting, and crocheting. She liked taking trips to play slot machines and other fun getaways. But her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. She took everyone under her wing and had a helping hand for anyone in need and always kept Jesus in her heart.

She is survived by her children: Valerie Kerr (Rob), John Guarino (Diane), Lori Guarino, and Carol Pray (Jim); grandchildren Amanda, Alisha (Anthony), Ashley (Kevin), Scott (Dani), Madison (Daniel), Hunter, Johnny, Mylie, and Ryan; great-grandchildren Kylie, Arianna, and Brielle; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law Claire and Barbara, friends, coworkers, and her lifelong best friend Joan.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband John Guarino, and siblings Helen, Mary, and Earl.

Arrangements are being handled by McHoul Funeral Home Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533. A private service will be held for immediate family, and a future Celebration of Life will be planned.
