PLEASANT VALLEY – Magdalena (Leni) Stolz nee Zurl, 92, an area resident since 2020 and formerly of Rocky Point in Long Island, passed peacefully in her home on November 9, 2023 surrounded by her three daughters.
Born in Morobitz, Gottschee (currently Slovenia), she was the daughter of Franz and Maria (Kump) Zurl. In Austria, as a young girl, she studied to become a seamstress. At 18, Leni arrived in the United States along with her sister, Trudi. They worked hard to bring the rest of their family to America. Leni worked as a bookkeeper for Lufthansa and then stayed home to raise her daughters. Once they went off to school, she used her time to work for the local school, a real estate agency, insurance agency, and retired from her clerical work for a travel agency. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Diane and Brian Roche, Irene and Luther Stephney, Karen and Joseph Wunderlich; her grandchildren, Brendan and Becky Roche, Kelsey and Ryan Marrano, Jordan Stephney and his girlfriend Madeline Schepis, Karlee Stephney, Saige Stephney, Zachary Wunderlich and his fiancée Yasmin Hack; Peter Wunderlich and his fiancée Sheah Tooley; and Victoria Wunderlich; her great grandchild James Marrano; and her brother and his wife Herbert and Florence Zurl; and sister Gerlinda Krick; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Stolz, parents, and siblings; Helmut Zurl; Trudi and Theodore Mandl; Maria and Guenter Roessler; and Edwald Krick.
Leni was a devoted wife, mother, and Oma. As a young family of five, their summers were spent boating, water skiing, and clamming on the Long Island Sound and their winters were spent snow skiing. In the home, her husband Peter built and they shared for 48 years, all curtains, pillows, upholstered chairs and benches were crafted by her hands. She was a master seamstress who made clothes for her family and supplied her daughters' homes with window treatments, pillows, toys' clothes, and more. She often would ask, "do you have anything for me to mend?" Her daughters brought their children to the family home for many holidays and to spend summers on the Sound.
She spent her retirement traveling the world with her husband and tending to their beautiful gardens. Leni, also known as Oma to her grandchildren and their friends, was happiest when she had her family together and could feed them well. She was an amazing cook and baker, and was especially known for her spectacular christmas cookies. We know that Oma is dancing with Opa (Peter) to Mack the Knife. Although she wasn't known to have a drink in her hand, she occasionally would sip on bourbon or a Bloody Mary. Her family asks that you enjoy a drink or a good meal in her honor.
Services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, 26 Chestnut Land Rd, New Milford, CT on the 20th of December 2023 at 10:30 AM. A celebration will follow at Del Primo, 450 Federal Rd, Brookfield, CT 06804 at 12pm. All are welcome.
