LAGRANGEVILLE – Manfred Karl Schunzel, 96, an area resident since the 1950's, passed away on March 3, 2024 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He previously lived in Lake Secor, NY.
Born in the Bronx on January 31, 1928, Fred was the son of the late George and Gertrude (Geyer) Schunzel. He proudly served in the US Army as Security Detail to protect General Douglas MacArthur, who commanded allied forces in the Asia Pacific in World War II, and received a WW II Victory Medal.
Fred retired from IBM in Poughkeepsie in 1988 after over 30 years of service in Quality Assurance.
He then worked for 14 years at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College.
Fred was a member of the Hudson Valley Amateur Radio Club, Dutchess County Ballroom Dancing community and a longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lagrangeville. He enjoyed 35 mm Photography, amateur radio, and gardening. He was a Big Band Enthusiast and attended concerts by many of the great artists including Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong. He liked classic car restoration on his Mercedes Benz 190 SL.
On July 14, 1957 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in White Plains, he married Anita (Meyer) Schunzel who predeceased him in 2017. He is survived by his son, Mark Schunzel and his wife Ilsia Nelly Jordan of Poughkeepsie and his grandson, Scott Schunzel.
