Obituary

Marget Cochrane Smith, a long-time resident of Hopewell Junction, died peacefully on March 9, 2024, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was 93.

Marget was born on August 5, 1930 in Yonkers, New York to the late John and Elizabeth (Hunter) Cochrane. Marget was the only member of her family born in the USA, after her family emigrated from Scotland in 1925.

On September 19, 1953, Marget married the love of her life, William Chalmers Smith, at Dayspring Presbyterian Church in Yonkers. He predeceased Marget on November 17, 1989.

Marget attended public schools in Yonkers, and was later employed at the Boyce Thompson Research Center and St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers.

Marget was a wonderful wife and mother. She leaves behind her daughter, Marjory Fiorile and her husband, Richard; her sons, Bruce Smith and his wife, Linda; and Charles Smith and his wife, Theresa; her grandchildren, Christine Harrington and her husband, Ben, Jennifer Fiorile and her husband, Ben, Heather Smith; Allison McLaughlin and her husband, Bruce, Ian Smith and his wife, Allison, Lorraine McMorrow and her husband Bill; her great grandchildren, Eleanor, Adelaide and Cecelia Harrington; Katherine and Claire Smith; Leighaire and Scott McLaughlin; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Marget was predeceased by her siblings, William Cochrane, Elizabeth Higgins, and Marjory McPherson.

Marget was a devoted member of the Hopewell Reformed Church with cherished friendships in her Christ-Care group. Marget was also a member of the Daughters of Scotia in Yonkers, and was a very active member of the Dayspring Presbyterian Church.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 3pm to 7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82 Hopewell Junction. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 10am followed by a burial at the Kensico Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, New York.
