Maria Rose Blacknick, 88, a resident of Wappingers Falls since June 1, 2011 and formerly of Manhattan, died on Monday, November 14, 2011 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born in New York City on August 28, 1923, she was the daughter of Valentine and Bertha Schounnot Meyer. She was a parishioner of St. Monica's Church, Manhattan and St. Columba Church, Hopewell Junction. Maria was very active in Democratic Club activities in Manhattan, as well as with the Brownies and Girl Scouts. She also was a member of the Mother's Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of Lacadera Council #429, Knights of Columbus.
On October 27, 1946 at St. Monica's Church in Manhattan, Maria married Charles Matthew Blacknick who survives at home. She is also survived by her daughters, Kathleen DeGeorge of Queens, Denise G. Rivera and her husband Rudy of Hopewell Junction and Doreen D. Blacknick of Wappingers Falls; her grandchildren, Jason and Jacqueline Rivera; and her brothers, William Meyer of Hopewell Junction and James Meyer of Australia. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Joseph DeGeorge; and her siblings, Eleanor Squazzo, Mildred Gurau and Joseph Meyer.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8 at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
