Maria Dores Fragoso Mendes, 93, a resident of Hopewell Junction for 23 years and formerly of Yonkers, died on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Putnam Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kent.

Born in Portugal on November 12, 1919, she was the daughter of Antonio and Nazare Morais Fragoso. Maria had been employed as a nursing home attendant in Yonkers and attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Wappingers Falls.

On February 6, 1943 in Portugal, Maria married Armelin C. Mendes who predeceased her on February 5, 2002. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Maria Mendes of Hopewell Junction; her brothers, Raul, Avelino and Luciano Fragoso; her grandchildren, Richard Coelho, Christine Johnson and Tracy Mendes; her great-grandchildren, Alex and Alison Coelho, Madison and Brynn Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Rosa Coelho in 1981; her grandson, Christopher Mendes in 2001; and her siblings, Jose, Joaquin and Antonio Fragoso, and Lucinda Dasilva.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 am at the funeral home followed by interment in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
