Marion (Mereness) Kverek, a long time Dutchess County resident, passed away gently and peacefully surrounded by her loving family on February 7th 2026. Marion was born June 3rd 1936 to Floyd and Marguerite Mereness of Schenectady, New York. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Floyd Mereness and her sister Mildred (Mereness) Pratt. Marion was also predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Richard Kverek.
Marion dedicated her life to the caring of others. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School, Marion attended Russell Sage College in Troy, New York where she studied nursing. She did her medical internship at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Marion went on to have a remarkable career of over 40 years caring for the sick and elderly. She served as the head supervising nurse at several hospitals and nursing homes.
Marion married her life long partner, Richard Kverek on May 24th 1958. Marion and Richard shared many adventures together. They moved from Syracuse to Wappingers Falls in 1965. Both were avid skiers and together they traveled the world tackling the most challenging slopes and most beautiful mountain ranges. Marion and Richard also loved boating, taking many trips from their beloved Hudson River going as far south as New Jersey and as far north as Montreal, Canada. Accomplished anglers, it was not uncommon for them to land 40-50 pound stripers from the Hudson and even larger salmon from Lake Ontario. They loved camping at Lake George and the Great Sacandaga Lake with family and friends. Marion was known to run a tight ship and is remembered for her fashionable outfits and witty sense of humor.
Marion and Richard had two children together, their daughter Debra Ann and their son Robert. Marion loved being a grandmother to Debra and Robert's children. After the passing of her husband, Marion moved to the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie, where she quickly bonded with the staff and made many friends. She was an active member of the Bell Choir and enjoyed participating in many other activities.
Marion is survived by her daughter Debra (Kverek) Rose and her husband Richard Rose of Red Hook, New York, and her son Robert Kverek and his wife Maureen Kverek of Poughkeepsie, New York. She is also survived by her grandson Michael Rose of Los Angeles and granddaughter Chelsea Rose of Brooklyn. In addition, she is survived by her granddaughter Shannon Au of Selah, Washington and Michael Boes of New York City. She is also survived by her loving sister in-law Rosemary Kverek of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Lutheran Care Center for their continuous warmth and support throughout her last few years. They would also like to thank Hudson Valley Hospice for their compassion and caring counsel.
