Mrs. Marion Carol Schimanke (nee Carballo), 85, a long time resident of Hamilton Road, Hopewell Junction, died on Monday February 6, 2012 at the Hospice of the Valley in Tempe, Arizona.
Mrs. Schimanke lived in Hopewell for over 50 years, having moved there from the Bronx. She was a Charter Member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fishkill.
Marion was born in Newark, New Jersey on November 8, 1926, the daughter of Mariana and Hermenegildo Carballo. She grew up in the Bronx, New York. In 1944 at the age of 17, Marion went to Washington DC to work for the War Department sending "Return to Duty" letters to the families of servicemen. After the war, she met and married her beloved husband Gus in 1952. They moved to Hopewell in 1960 and Marion worked as a guidance and principal's secretary at Roy C. Ketcham High School until her retirement in 1989. While working full time and raising two children, she completed an Associates Degree in Business from Dutchess Community College in 1977 with honors.
Marion sang in church choirs for over 60 years starting as a soprano and ending as a tenor. She was also a member of the handbell ringers of Our Savior Lutheran. When not singing, she was a square dancer and during her retirement traveled throughout the United States with her husband in their recreational vehicle. She will be remembered for the countless baby blankets and preemie hats she crocheted for Vassar Brother's Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Marion is survived by her husband, Gus, now of Mesa, Arizona; a son Herman, of Phoenix Arizona; a daughter, Mrs. David (Elena) Howard and grandson David, of Tacoma, Washington; nieces, Mrs. Erik (Cecilia) Carballo-Burgos and Alexia Carballo of Fairfax, Virginia.
