Martin
Kirwan
December 7, 1936 – December 29, 2025
Martin E. Kirwan passed away on December 29, 2025 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 7, 1936 in the Bronx to the late Martin and Elizabeth (Bock) Kirwan. On May 16, 1964, he married his beloved wife Margaret "Peggy" (O'Rourke) Kirwan. They spent many happy years together until her death in 1990.
Martin was known by all of his family as "Blitz." It was a nickname his family gave to him when he was a little boy during World War II and it stuck with him all of his life. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy and in the Army National Guard. He loved his country, he loved the city of New York, especially the Bronx where he was from and where he spent his career with the NYC Sanitation Department. Family was everything to him.
Martin had a great sense of humor, he was an incredibly positive person who lived his life with honor and loyalty to his country and his loved ones. He could find common ground with just about anyone and make great conversation. He was truly one of a kind.
Martin is survived by his 3 children and their spouses: Martin E. Kirwan Jr. and his wife Lisa, Kevin J. Kirwan and his wife Shannon, and Elizabeth C. Mulligan and her husband Colm; his grandchildren: Ciara, Sean, Brigit, Aine, Maeve, and Jocelyn; his brother Stephen Kirwan; his sister Suzy Kirwan and many extended family members whom he loved so much.
In addition to his parents and his wife Peggy, he was predeceased by his brothers James Kirwan and Joseph Kirwan.
