Obituary

Martin Albert Kraus, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on May 29, 2024, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center due to complications from lymphoma. He was 72 years old.

Martin was born on June 23, 1951, in White Plains, NY, the son of Albert and Muriel (LeViness) Kraus. He graduated from Westlake High School in 1969 and began working at Con Edison in 1973. After starting in the copy room, Martin then worked out in the field for a number of years before finally moving to the electrical engineering department. His incredible mind for numbers, architecture, and design led him to create an important estimating tool for the company that is still used to this day. He retired in 2012.

More importantly, Martin met the love of his life, Kerry (Rooney) in 1977. After years of backpacking and other outdoor adventures, they were married on June 20, 1981, in Harrison, NY. In 1986 Martin and Kerry built their own house in LaGrangeville, NY where they then raised their family and lived until the present day. He raised his daughters to be strong, smart, independent women and was endlessly proud of them. One of his favorite things to do with his family was to travel - his trips to national parks and to Ireland and Hawaii were among his favorites.

In addition to his work at Con Edison, Martin worked part-time for many years at Nilsson's Greenhouse in Hawthorne, NY, which helped spur his love for gardening and the outdoors. He was an incredible photographer and loved taking pictures of landscapes, animals, architecture, and his family. He loved all kinds of music and attended hundreds of concerts throughout his lifetime and had an extensive collection of records, CDs and concert memorabilia. As an avid soccer fan, he especially enjoyed watching European soccer leagues and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. He took his daughters to many Yankee games, as well as other sporting events, including the 1999 Women's World Cup which was the spark for their lifelong love of playing and watching soccer. He loved all animals, especially his grand-dogs, and was a long-time platelet and blood donor to the New York Blood Center where he was honored for his years of donating.

In addition to his wife Kerry, Martin is survived by his beloved daughters and their spouses: Jocelyn Kraus (Christopher Jarvis) and Lindsey Kraus (Emily Webster), his sister Linda Pratt, his mother-in-law Olive Rooney, and his three grand-dogs who he adored and will miss him terribly: Wren, Penny, and Rooney.

Memorial donations can be made in Martin's name to the New York Blood Center at www.give.nybc.org or to Paws Crossed at www.pawscrossedny.org. Please also consider donating blood or platelets in his memory.
