Mary Jo Budney Knapp, daughter of Betty and Stanley (Mackey) Budney, was born on November 24, 1951 and died on September 27, 2014 after a long struggle with cancer.
She grew up in Cold Spring and after marrying Peter Knapp moved to Fishkill, NY. Mary Jo & Peter were owners of Pete’s Hometown Grocery, a deli in Nelsonville, NY, celebrating its 27th year this year.
Mary Jo was active in the community growing up. She was very involved with the C.Y.O. (Catholic Youth Organization), serving as president during her teenage years. While growing up, she also spent a lot of time at the riverfront. It was her place to be. She attended Haldane School and graduated in June of 1969.
Mary Jo always had a big heart for children, and would be there for them no matter the reason. She fostered multiple children for quite a few years. She also loved animals and they would love her back. She knew every kind of bird and could name them as they flew by. Mary Jo was very compassionate, with lots of love to share.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Knapp of Fishkill; daughter, Aileen Croft & husband Roger of Poughkeepsie; her mother, Betty (Wright) Budney of Cold Spring; her sisters, Cathy Greenough of Cold Spring and Denise Brewer & husband Byron of Brewster; and her brother-in-law, Thomas Knapp & wife Deirdre of Cold Spring.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her dad, Stanley (Mackey) Budney in June of 2013.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 3 at Cold Spring Cemetery, Peekskill Road, Cold Spring.
