Mary J. Mayfield, a former resident of Fishkill, Peekskill and Brewster, Massachusetts, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the home of her son in Barre, VT. She was 83.
The only child of the late Sean and Nora (Hickey) Downey, she was born in the Washington Heights section of New York City on September 10, 1931. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Thomas J. Mayfield at St. Elizabeth Church in New York. When she married Tom, she gained the large family she had always desired. She loved spending time with her 10 brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and the 15 nieces and nephews who came along through the years. Tom and Mary were blessed with two sons, John and Tom who were born in 1953 and 1956. They bought their first house in Continental Village in 1960, made it a home for their family for the next 32 years and met many people who became life-long friends.
For 20 years, Mary worked as an executive assistant for Nestle U.S.A. in White Plains. She retired in 1991. In 1992, she and Thomas moved to their beloved Cape Cod, where they had spent family vacations since 1959 and finally called home. In 2004, they returned to Fishkill in order to be closer to their family and friends.
Mary cherished spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved going out to eat with family and friends, visiting the "babies", spending time on the beach, reading, and traveling with Tom in "Poppee's Little Camper".
She was predeceased by Tom on November 26, 2011.
Survivors include her son two sons and their wives, John and Shannon (Blais) Mayfield of Barre, VT and Thomas and Sue Mayfield of Wappingers Falls; her grandchildren, Tara Pedrosa & her husband Mark, Thomas Mayfield & his fiancé Paige Robertson, Sean Mayfield, and Madelyn Mayfield; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Camille, Remi, and Thomas.
