Mary McCann Swartz, 83, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1967 and formerly of Clifton, NJ, died on May 21, 2026 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital.
Born in Reading, PA on October 28, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Agnes (Hatler) McCann.
On September 7, 1963 at St. Virgil's Church in Morris Plains, NJ, Mary married Robert J. Swartz. Together they started their family businesses, Swartz Auto Body & Garage and SwartzMart in Hopewell Junction that they ran together for many years. Bob predeceased her on May 18, 1998.
Mary was a parishioner of St. Columba Church. She was a member of the Hillside Lake Fire Company and East Fishkill Rescue Squad, and volunteered as an ambulance driver for many years. She also served as a Dutchess County Legislator representing the Town of East Fishkill from 1996-2012. Mary had been a member of the East Fishkill Rotary Club, East Fishkill Republican Club and East Fishkill Republican Committee. She enjoyed golfing and bowling, and was an avid dog lover and rescuer.
Mary is survived by her children, Deborah Swartz and Robert Swartz and his wife Darlene; her siblings, Judy Cazzetto and Thomas McCann; her brother-in-law, Tom Swartz and his wife Joan; her sister-in-law, Carol Coe and her husband Larry; her neighbor who was like a son to her, Spencer Guptil, his wife Christi, their children, Lindsay and Ani, and Zack, and their grandchildren, Olivia and Henry; her faithful canine companion, Oreo; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews especially Lauren and Chris Zeris who have been a great support to Mary. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by her brothers-in-law, John Cazzetto and Walter Swartz.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 29 from 3-7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. There will be a Celebration of Life at 6pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, May 30 at 11am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
