LAGRANGE – Maureen Moran Doherty, 83, an area resident for 45 years, died peacefully on July 10, 2021.
Born on January 14, 1938 in Queens, Maureen was the daughter of James and Anna (Normyle) Moran. She had many fond memories of growing up in the Bronx and of spending summers with her cousins and extended family at Lake Ballard, where she met her husband, Paul. Maureen graduated from the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula and worked as an administrative assistant for General Motors in Manhattan. On December 1, 1962 Maureen married Paul Doherty at St. Philip Neri Church in the Bronx. Maureen and Paul lived on the lake in Mahopac for 12 years before moving to LaGrangeville.
Maureen is survived by her husband, Paul and their five children and their partners, Pamela (Mark), Robert (Kelly), John (Carla), Matthew (Mandy) and Maureen; her grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Mason and Marlo; her brother, James Moran and his wife Hideko; and many nieces and nephews.
Maureen was known for her sense of humor, huge heart, keen intelligence, warmth, searching mind, spirituality, boundless hospitality and her dedication to her family.
In the 1970s, Maureen started a chapter of Birthright in the Mahopac area to provide love, support and hope for women navigating unplanned pregnancies. In the 1990s she owned and operated Kinvara Gallery and Frame Shop in Hopewell Junction. In 2003, she proudly graduated from Dutchess Community College. Maureen was an active member of the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, and appreciated its beautiful choir and commitment to inclusivity. Maureen was also a member of the LaGrange Sunrise Rotary Club and had volunteered at LaGrange Library. Maureen was a voracious reader and enjoyed writing poetry. She loved all things Irish— including tea, prose, music and pottery, as well as the country's wild and lush green land. More than anything, Maureen adored and delighted in her husband, children and grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11am at Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, 1168 Route 55, LaGrangeville, followed by interment in Freedom Plains Cemetery.
