Miguel Angel Alvarez, 35, a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, died on Monday, October 25, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center following a long illness.
"Too young to be gone" but that is the Almighty's choice. Miguel was a best friend, kind brother and loyal son. He had a fulfilling professional, personal and civic life even in his short time. Most importantly, he fought the odds of his socioeconomic environment with a good sense of humor and much stoicism. He would never surrender.
Since 2006, a fateful cancer came upon his path and finally overran him in 2010. However, that is not what should be remembered of Miguel's life. He embodied the hope of continuing the struggle to better our minds and social environment and to achieve any goals that we may have set in the first place.
Miguel had a wholesome charisma and confidence in the future for his relatives, his friends and his local Poughkeepsie community because he believed in the goodness of human nature regardless of our shortcomings.
Born in Monticello on September 22, 1975, Miguel was a 1994 graduate of Tri-Valley High School. He received his Associates Degree from SUNY Morrisville, his Bachelors Degree from Marist College in 2000 and his Masters Degree from Adelphi University in 2002. He was employed as a Social Worker for the Child Guidance Clinic in Waterbury, CT and had formerly been employed as a Social Worker in addictions at St. Francis Hospital.
On March 31, 2005 in Poughkeepsie, Miguel married Luz Patricia Alvarez. She survives him at home along with their four year old son, Xavier Angel Alvarez and his mother-in-law, Luz Maria Mock of Panama.
