Neil was born in Queens, New York on February 21, 1939. He and his surviving wife, Anne Marie Mahoney became longtime residents of Fishkill soon after they were married in 1963.

Neil graduated with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College as a member of Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society. His classmates appreciated his bright sense of humor, calling him a gem of a human being and a great friend.

Neil had a successful career spanning from engineer to senior manager at IBM and was respected by many, earning awards for his leadership. He became an Industry Professor and Director of General Engineering at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn and enjoyed teaching and interacting with students.

A reader and thinker with a curious intellect, he stayed abreast of current events, editorials, and discourse. He loved attending classical music performances and listening to distinguished speakers.

A devoted husband, Neil called his wife, Anne Marie, "amazing." He was a supportive father, loving grandfather, and longtime caregiver. Neil was faithful, responsible, and proud of his professional accomplishments, but most of all his family and home.

Neil liked people and conversation, fostered longtime relationships, and enjoyed reminiscing with colleagues. He took on countless home improvements with an eye to quality and detail. At the end of the day, he loved nothing more than sitting in front of a roaring fire in his woodburning stove, surrounded by friends and family.

Neil is survived by his wife Anne Marie Mahoney, sons Neil S. Mahoney, Sean Mahoney, and Douglas Mahoney, and Sean's wife, Christine Mahoney, granddaughters Tara Plant and Chiara Riley and their husbands, Michael Plant and John Philip Riley.

A mass will be held at Saint Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to NAMI Mid-Hudson (at namimidhudson.org).
