Nicholas Galasso, a resident of Fishkill since 2012, formerly of the Bronx, died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 98.
He was born on May 23, 1917 at his family's home in the Bronx, where he continued to live for more than 90 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Maria (Potenza) Galasso.
In 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He landed on Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy. While stationed overseas, he met Jeanne Helen Thiebert of Spa, Belgium. They were married on April 6, 1946, just one month before Nicholas was discharged from service. He was predeceased by Helen in 2008.
He had a long career with A & P, where he was employed for more than 50 years. He retired in 1979 as produce manager. He was also an avid New York Yankees fan, and always cherished attending games at Yankee Stadium up until his latter years.
Nicholas is survived by his children, Richard Galasso & his wife Josette of South Carolina, Robert Galasso & his wife Catherine of Pleasant Valley, Donna Fitzgerald & her husband Jimmy of Fishkill, and Carol Galasso of Westchester County; his grandchildren, Nikki Watkins & her husband James, Craig Galasso & his wife Kim, Jeannie Kraus & her husband Thomas, Scott Fitzgerald & his girlfriend Joey, and Diana Sefcik & her husband Brian; his great-grandchildren, Ohanna, Toni-Ann, Brandon, Jenna, James, Ava, and Santino. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives & friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by all of his siblings, Philip Galasso, Leonard Galasso, Millie DiMartino, Frank Galasso, Margaret Galasso, Anthony Galasso, and Anna Galasso.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 20 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
