Obituary

Oi Yuk Chiu, 75, a resident of Hopewell Junction, New York, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Hong Kong, China on April 9, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Yee Tang Chiu and Yuk Ying Chan. Oi Yuk grew up in Hong Kong and immigrated to America at age 19. On May 12, 1970, Oi Yuk married Kwun-Hui Cheung. Together, they proudly raised their three children in Poughkeepsie, New York. She was the owner and operator of the Chinese Lantern, the first Chinese sit-down restaurant in Poughkeepsie. She also owned Dynasty Gifts in the South Hills Mall for many years. Oi Yuk will be remembered for her generosity and kind-heartedness, always welcoming everybody to her home with open arms.

Oi Yuk (aka Mui) loved traveling to Atlantic City where she looked forward to meeting and spending time with her siblings. She spent countless hours on the phone chatting with her siblings, always keeping everyone up to date. Every morning, Oi Yuk started off her day with a cup of hot tea and made sure her Chinese channel was turned on. She never missed an opportunity for some good seafood. Oi Yuk could always be found playing mahjong, whether it was with her whole family or on her tablet. Most of all, she loved nothing more than to be surrounded by her nine grandchildren. Oi Yuk took great pride in helping raise and pass on her wisdom and values to her grandchildren, whom she was always so proud of. Most recently, she rekindled her love of animals with a new pet kitten whom she loved to watch and play with.

She is survived by her husband; children and their spouses: Christine Cheung and Gary Mark, Jason Cheung and Fiona Lai, Lily Cheung and Jason Zhang; her grandchildren: Andrew Mark, Brianna Mark, Caitlyn Mark, Deniya Mark, Sabrina Cheung, Nicholas Cheung, Ivan Zhang, Karina Zhang, and Alek Zhang; her siblings and their spouses: Tang Lai Kuen and Tang Kwok Chung, Michael Chiu and Lisa Chiu, Susanna Chiu and Jan Si Chen, Helen Chiu and Thomas Syer, Sonny Chiu and Jan Jan Chen, Po Bower and Fred Bower; her sister-in-law: Sui Yee (Anna) Chiu; and 16 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Sin Tak Chiu.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18 from 2-5pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.
