PLEASANT VALLEY - Olive D. Whalen of Pleasant Valley passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2015.
Born in Clifton, NJ on July 8, 1920, Olive was the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Goetschius) Winfield. Olive graduated from Southampton Hospital School of Nursing and received a BS Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.
She had been employed by Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, NYC and the Visiting Nurse Service of NYC. Olive served as Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps during World War II. After the War, Olive worked as a School Nurse Teacher for Ramapo Central School District in Suffern, where she met her husband, John "Jack" E. Whalen. While raising her children, Olive continued working for the Visiting Nurse Service in Rome, NY and then in Poughkeepsie. She enjoyed gardening, landscaping, dancing and listening to music.
Olive was predeceased by her husband, John "Jack" E. Whalen; her sister, Katherine Digges; and her grandson, George "Skipper" Lithco III. She is survived by her sons, Edward Whalen of Alameda, CA and Peter Whalen and his wife Maggi of Salt Point; her daughter, Margaret and her husband George Lithco II; her grandson, John Robert Lithco of Pleasant Valley; and several nieces and a nephew.
Olive was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pleasant Valley, Women of the Moose-Hyde Park, Leisure Time Dancers of the Poughkeepsie Elks and Mahwenawasigh Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 9-11 am at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service will be Thursday at 11 am at the funeral home followed by burial at St. Peter's Cemetery in Rosendale with military honors.
