Obituary

Paul T. Harris, a beloved resident of the Hudson Valley for over 50 years, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024, at the Hudson Valley Hospice House in Hyde Park, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Paul was the son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Schuyler) Harris. The family later settled in Blauvelt, NY, where Paul and his five younger siblings grew up. He maintained lifelong friendships with many from his childhood, especially his closest friends, affectionately known as the "Creek Boys."

Paul was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War aboard the submarine USS Spinax. After his service, he worked for McAllister Brothers in New York Harbor. Over his 40+ year career, he advanced from Tugboat Captain to the distinguished role of Harbor Docking Pilot before retiring.

If you ever needed to find Paul, chances are he was at McCann Golf Course playing 18 holes in a freshly ironed golf shirt and shorts. After retirement, he continued to enjoy the course while working a few days a week as a course ranger, forming many friendships along the way.

Deeply involved in his community, Paul coached his kids in the East Fishkill softball and baseball leagues for many years and was a member of the Lomala Civic Association.

One of Paul's greatest joys in life was being "Papa" to his six grandchildren. He passed down his charm, wit and sarcasm to each of them, and "Papa's Sauce" became a cherished weekly dinner tradition for his children and grandchildren.

On September 5, 1971, Paul married the love of his life, Shirley (Johnson) Harris, in Tappan, NY. The two met in middle school, and their friendship blossomed into a love that spanned more than 53 years of marriage.

Paul is survived by his wife, Shirley, and their children: Jennifer Harris Birrittella of Poughkeepsie, NY; Grey Harris and his wife Tracie of Darien, CT; and Paul (PJ) Harris and his wife Maca of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Schuyler, Caden, and Emerson Birrittella; and Addison, Grey, and Ainsley Harris. Paul leaves behind his brother, Boe (Thomas) Harris and his wife Margaret, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his siblings Leslie, Patricia, Michael, and Christine.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Hudson Valley Hospice House for their exceptional care and compassion.

A celebration of Paul's life will be held on Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m. at the Lomala Civic Center, 108 Lomala Lane, Hopewell Junction, NY.

All are welcome to join in remembering Paul and sharing memories of his remarkable life.
