POUGHKEEPSIE – Peter R. Hammerling, 90, died on September 17, 2021 at the Grand at River Valley in Poughkeepsie.

Born in Queens on June 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Max and Emma (Roth) Hammerling. He proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Peter spent his career as a self-employed contractor specializing in woodworking and carpentry.

On August 17, 1956 in Philadelphia, PA, Peter married Catherine C. Hammerling who predeceased him in 1998. Peter was also predeceased by his son James Hammerling in 1998. He is survived by his children, Peter R. Hammerling, Jr. of Florida, Steve Hammerling and his wife Kelly of Napanoch, NY, and Fred Hammerling and his wife Andrea of Poughkeepsie, NY; his grandchildren, Bobby, Cathy, Jimmy, Laura, Allie, Jared, and Danielle; many great-grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Patricia Healey.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Community Chapel Mausoleum at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery followed by military honors.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Make a Wish Foundation.
