Obituary

Peter J. Valen, 79, a resident of Poughquag and previously of Flushing, died on February 21, 2022 at home surrounded by his family.
Born on November 11, 1942 in Queens, Peter was the son of John Peter and Bernice (Gogis) Valen. On May 1, 1971 at St. Benedict's in the Bronx, Peter married the love of his life, Mary Ann Shaw who survives at home.
Peter worked as an assistant vice president for UBS Financial Services, Inc. in New York City and New Jersey for over 40 years until his retirement in 2004. He was very patriotic and loved his country, he proudly served our country on the USS John Paul Jones (DD932) Destroyer from 1962-1964. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Knights of Columbus #4065. Peter was a soccer coach and referee for Beekman Soccer Club where he was also past treasurer.
In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by his children, Karen Vanwolde and her husband Kyle of Loch Sheldrake, Steven Valen of Hyde Park, and William Valen of Van Cleave, MI; and his grandchildren, Gianna Valen, Isabella, Gavin, Aubree, and Kaleb Vanwolde. In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his siblings, Ralph Valen and Carolyn Campbell.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 11am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment at St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Denis Church, US Paralyzed Veterans, Wounded Warriors Project or the Knights of Columbus.
