Obituary

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NY – Philip Laurent Mercier, PhD, 86, formerly of Spartanburg, SC and Ramsey, NJ, died on Valentine's Day, Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Baltic, CT on October 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Philip and Marie Coet-Meur Mercier. He married Muriel T. Tetreault on August 13, 1955 and they had five children together. Muriel passed away on December 21, 1982 with her sister, Dr. Alice I. Tetreault, providing personal nursing care. Alice was always close to her sister and family. Philip and Alice wed on August 10, 1985 and they spent many happy years in South Carolina. Alice predeceased Philip on June 16, 2011, after which Philip resided with his daughter, Jane, at her residence.

He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WW II. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Brown University in 1955. Dr. Mercier was employed as a Polymer Chemist for Tupperware in North Augusta, SC until his retirement. He was a former parishioner at St. Paul's Church in Ramsey, NJ and Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church in Spartanburg, SC. During his retirement in Spartanburg, SC, Philip volunteered at the local hospital, soup kitchen, and was very active in the community.

Philip is survived by his children, Paula Cosgrove and her husband Michael of Newtown, CT, Jane Zuckerman and her husband Jon of Hopewell Junction, NY, Carl Mercier and his wife Linda of New Milford, CT, Louise Kessler and her husband Glenn of Newtown, CT, and Michael Mercier and his wife Winnie of Folsom, CA; his grandchildren, Caitlin and Jessica Cosgrove, Marc and Paul Lake, and David Mercier; his sister, Theresa Gauthier of Ridgefield, CT; his sister-in-law, Dorothea Mercier of Storrs, CT; his Goddaughter, Eileen Michaud of Phoenixville, PA; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Thomas Mercier and Joseph Raymond Mercier and his brother-in-law, Fred Gauthier.

A Mass of Christian Burial with military honors will be celebrated at St. Paul's Church in Ramsey, NJ at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. For online condolences, please visit www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
