It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Preethi Nethaji Atulugama, a beloved member of the Poughkeepsie community. Born on August 19, 1958, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Preethi embraced life with passion and kindness until he peacefully departed on August 14, 2024, in Poughkeepsie, NY, surrounded by his family.
A dedicated transit operator at Liberty Lines Transit in Yonkers, NY, Preethi thrived in the transportation industry, showcasing unwavering commitment and diligence in his role. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a devoted family man, survived by his cherished wife Paduma Atulugama, son Rusiru, and daughters Manisha and Venuri. He will be greatly missed by the family pet, Dany. Preethi's presence in the community will be sorely missed, as he was renowned for his selfless service and warm smile.
Residing in Poughkeepsie since 2006, Preethi was an esteemed founder and member of the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center, where he found solace and shared his spiritual devotion with others. His dedication to charitable causes stems back to his involvement with his local Lions Club in Sri Lanka, resonating deeply with those who benefited from his generosity and altruism.
A tribute to his heritage, Preethi, whom attended Dharmapala College, exuded a love for his Sri Lankan roots, proudly supporting the national cricket team and embracing his cultural traditions. His passion for music and his penchant for singing karaoke added a touch of joy and harmony to every gathering he graced.
In honor of his remarkable life, a Buddhist service will take place on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm followed by a Visitation from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY where friends, family, and members of the community are invited to pay their respects. The funeral ceremonies are scheduled to celebrate Preethi's legacy and commemorate the immeasurable impact he had on all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though Preethi may have departed this earthly realm, his spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who were touched by his kindness, unwavering compassion, and zest for life. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration as we remember a man of integrity, faith, and boundless love.
Preethi was preceded in death by his parents, Premadasa and Gladys (Desinghe) Atulugamage.
In honor of the legacy of community and service that Preethi left behind, memorial donations may be made to the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center.
