Richard
Cunningham
April 30, 1964 – August 31, 2024
Peekskill- Richard Michael Cunningham, a resident of Peekskill, NY, passed away suddenly on August 31, 2024. He was 60 years old.
Richard was born in Bronx, NY on April 30, 1964, the son of Richard and Mary Cunningham.
He received his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Mercy College and then started his career as a Police Officer with the NYPD. In 1989 he transferred to the Town of Greenburgh Police Department where he was still on the force at the time of his death.
Richard was a decorated Police Officer with almost 40 years of service, a job he lived and loved. He was considered one of the most accomplished detectives in the history of the Greenburgh Police Department. Over the last 30 years, Rich was often called upon to investigate the most serious crimes that occurred in the town. He was highly successful investigating Major Cases, Cold Cases, and took pride in mentoring many young investigators.
Richard was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and soon to be grandfather who enjoyed cooking and loved taking care of his garden. While his kids grew up, he dedicated his time to coaching on the soccer field and barbecuing on the grill. Richard loved a full house, full bellies, and an audience to make laugh.
In recent years he loved the outdoors - hiking, walking on the Beacon waterfront, and going to the beach.
His children survive him: Christopher and his wife Andalee, Kate and her fiancé Nicholas Shields, and Bridget Cunningham. He is also survived by his mother Mary, his sister Colleen DeCicco and her husband Daniel, brothers Brian Cunningham and Christopher Cunningham, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and co-workers. He will be missed by all.
Richard is predeceased by his father Richard.
Where he is, Richard has a New York Yankees, Giants or Rangers game on in the background.
