Obituary

Robert A. Dyer, a resident of Fishkill since 1962, formerly of California, West Point, New Jersey, and Staten Island, died on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 94.
Son of the late William and Rachel (Campbell) Dyer, he was born in Stillwater, NY on November 15, 1921 and was raised in Saratoga County. He graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1941.
Robert dedicated his career to the United States Military, having served in both the Navy and Army. A Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, he enlisted in 1942 and remained committed to service until 1962, when he was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class after more than 20 years of service. He specialized as a clinical and medical laboratory technician.
Throughout his career, Sgt. Dyer was stationed at bases throughout the world including Fort Baker, Sausalito, CA; Okinawa; West Point; Taiwan; Manhattan; Fort Dix, NJ; St. Alban’s and Brooklyn Naval Hospitals; Scotland; Great Lakes, IL; Rhode Island; and Maryland. He also served aboard several fleet vessels such as 606 and 763 Destroyers and Littoral Combat Ships.
Following his retirement, he worked as a laboratory manager for Highland Hospital in Beacon and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He also worked part-time for National Health in New Paltz.
On July 1, 1950, he married Dorothy M. Dyer in Clifton, NJ. After 62 years of marriage, Robert was predeceased by his wife in 2012.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Stephanie Dyer of Hopewell Junction; also many nieces, nephews, and other relatives & friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Robert was also predeceased by his siblings, Leona Larkin, Virginia Sullivan, John Dyer, Marie Jones, William Dyer, and Lorraine Bertrand.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
