Robert passed away peacefully on October 07, 2026, at the age of 86, in Poughquag, NY.
Born in Hopewell Junction to Harry and Edith (Nordstrand) Nichols, Robert loved his family, country living, the great outdoors, and all things trains. He was an athlete and graduate of Roy C. Ketcham High School where he met the love of his life, Gail June Case. They were married on June 16, 1962 at the Hopewell Reformed Church and built a home on Robinson Lane in Wappinger Falls. Robert enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader for his two sons, Robert Scott Nichols and Russell E. Nichols. Robert retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1994.
Robert is predeceased by his wife Gail June Case, son Robert Scott Nichols, and grandson Ryan Edward Nichols.
Robert's love of hunting and fishing made him the oldest member of the Whortlekill Rod and Gun Club until his passing. Robert was proud of his part in creating the lake at Whortlekill where his father was a founding member in 1935. Robert was also a member of the Hopewell Hose Fire Company.
Robert enjoyed all things trains. While enjoying a US cross-country trip, he would seek-out historic train rides from that area. He also loved his extensive model train sets.
Robert is survived by his son Russell Nichols, his wife Lynn and their daughter Victoria and grandson-in-law Ryan Widrick; daughter-in-law Christine and her daughter Rebecca; nephew Christopher Case, his wife Jennifer, and his children Jack and Katie Case.
