Obituary


Robert Gerhard Krauss, 90, of Hopewell Junction, died early Wednesday morning, October 14, 2009. He was born September 13, 1919, in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Johannes and Maria Krauss.
Robert married Ursula Michalzik in 1944 in Germany. After the war due to difficult economic times in Germany they immigrated to the USA, with the help of his older brother John who had immigrated in the 1930s and owned a successful meat processing business in Jamaica, Queens.
They lived with their two children Barbara and Rolf in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Margaret, their youngest child, was born in 1953. In 1958 they moved to Richmond Hill, Queens. At John Krauss Inc. Robert became foreman and worked there for 22 years. In 1974 he retired from John Krauss Inc. after which he and Ursula owned and operated a Dairy Store in the Richmond Hill section of Queens for 9 years.
After selling their business and retiring in 1983 they moved to Millbrook, NY where he pursued his passion for gardening. They joined the Forever Young Club, and the German Club Germania in Poughkeepsie. They sang in Germania's choir at state competitions and staged twice yearly dinner recitals.
Robert is mourned by Ursula Krauss, Barbara (Gilbert) Endrulat, Rolf (Susan) Krauss, Margaret (James) Onesios, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren
In Brooklyn they were members of Zion Kirche (Church). In Queens, they were members of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmond Hill, sang in the choir and were active in church. In Millbrook they were members of Lyall Memorial Federated Church.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday October 17th and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday October 18th at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.  The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. John Young officiating.
