Robert (Rob) McDonald, 58, of Poughquag, NY, passed away suddenly on March 1, 2024. Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, he was a master craftsman and the proud owner of McDonald Carpentry. Rob graduated from Carmel High School and pursued further education at SUNY New Paltz, but his passion for learning extended far beyond his formal education.
Described as a Renaissance man by many who knew him, Rob was a lifelong learner who held a deep appreciation for history, music, nature, and working with his hands. Whether building and repairing guitars, working on cars, perfecting collectibles, or turning the pages of a book, his childlike curiosity never waned.
Known for his loyalty, Rob was a true friend and neighbor, always looking out for others. He spent over two decades of his life serving the community with unwavering dedication. Rob served as a member and past Lieutenant of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department and was also a former Lieutenant of the Beekman Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as an EMT and firefighter. In addition to his years of service, Rob generously shared his knowledge and expertise with hundreds of incoming firefighters as a NYS Fire Training Instructor for Putnam County.
Rob played an instrumental role in designing and establishing a 9/11 memorial in Beekman, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of first responders. He also contributed his craftsmanship to renovate a historic Red Hook, NYC fire station, providing a home for Friends of Firefighters counseling and wellness services.
Among his proudest achievements, Rob was a loving and devoted father to his daughters, Megan and Madeline McDonald, who brought him immense joy. Whether sharing his wisdom, love for music and nature, philosophizing, visiting historical sites, coaching their sports teams, or just taking the scenic route, every moment spent with his girls was cherished.
Rob is survived by his daughters, Megan and Madeline, his father, Jim McDonald, his brother, Sean Scotti (and Sean's wife, Tammy), his niece, Caitlynne Scotti, and his nephew, Jordan (and Jordan's wife, Destiny) Scotti. Rob also leaves behind his partner, Cindy Kulish. He was predeceased by his mother, Anne (Lortz) McDonald.
Rob's legacy will be remembered through his brave spirit, sense of humor, and steadfast commitment to his family, friends, and community.
A memorial service to celebrate Rob's life will be held from 2-6pm on Saturday, March 9 at McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Kent Volunteer Fire Department or the Friends of Firefighters organization in Rob's memory.
