Robert (Bob) Nufer died peacefully on September 26th, surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Amityville, NY on July 22, 1936. He spent his youth in Bellmore, NY and graduated from Mepham high school where he was on the wrestling team and ran cross country. He received his AAS in chemistry from SUNY Farmingdale and his BS in chemistry from Adelphi University. He started his Engineering career with Grumman Aerospace on Long Island and worked there for 10 years. In 1967, he and his wife Carolyn, and their young daughter relocated to the Hudson Valley when Bob took a job with IBM. He worked for IBM for the next 25 years, rising to Senior Engineer and earning 19 patents and over 60 inventions for his work in multi-layer ceramics and computer processing technologies. Bob was an active member of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) where he served as president and was awarded the honor of fellowship. He retired from IBM in 1992, and in 1993 he formed Seven Oaks Realty with Carolyn and worked in real estate over the following years.
Bob was a true engineer at heart, able to fix anything. He was generous with all these abilities and was always willing to help a neighbor or family member with a project, and to teach others how to do the things he could do. He loved gardening and using his farm tractor to do various yard and garden projects. Bob was an avid cyclist and rode his bicycle to keep in great shape most of his life. He could often be seen in the mornings, cruising down Limekiln Road on the way to work at the East Fishkill IBM plant.
Bob and Carol enjoyed traveling, visiting family in Germany, exploring the US, extended stays in Hawaii, and taking their three-week trip to Aruba each fall; where Bob enjoyed the beaches during the day and the casinos in the evening, leveraging his engineering skills at the craps tables. Bob enjoyed spending time with his 3 grandsons sharing stories of his youth, teaching them chess, and listening to their stories about life and activities.
