Captain Roy William Johansen (1937-2013)
Roy was born in Brooklyn in 1937 to Astrid Marie Lundberg and Hans Johansen of Norway. He was the baby of the family and now joins his deceased older brothers Andrew and Bob. Alice Nyberg, his only sister, survives him in Crugers, NY.
He grew up in Brooklyn, NY but summered in the Hopewell Junction Community of Hillside Lake. In April of 1954 he joined the United States Navy where he served in active duty during the Korean War until March of 1957. A benefit his family later felt during his hospice time in the "Hero's Harbor" unit of the VA Medical Center at Castle Point. He was given an honorable and dignified death there.
Roy received his High School Equivalence Diploma, Associates Degree in Sonar, the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal during his years in the Navy. He remained enamored by the sea and worked tirelessly to receive his Captain's license later in life. The Naval honors granted him entry into IBM's employ in Poughkeepsie, NY where he met his second wife.
On February 5th 1972 he married Doris May Johnson of Bournemouth, England at the Community Methodist Church in Wappingers Falls, NY. Present at the wedding was the daughter he adopted soon thereafter, Jacqueline Renee Johansen. Roy and Doris enjoyed their forty one years together in Stormville, where she, Freckles (their Springer Spaniel) and Frack (their cat) still reside. Doris is an active member of the Hopewell Reformed Church where Roy "checked the foundations" occasionally.
Roy became known as Bestefar (Norwegian for Grandfather) in 1993 and again in 1994 when his surviving grandson, Richie R. Hoffman and granddaughter, Heather R. Hoffman were born. Roy was a great friend to many, perhaps non-more than his son-in-law, Randall A. Hoffman.
Doris, Alice, Jackie, Randy, Richie, Heather, Freckles and Frack all ask that, should you desire to continue his legacy, please send contributions to Castle Point VAMC for a van in his memory (VA Hudson Valley Health Care System, 41 Castle Point Road, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590) or Anderson Center for Autism (PO Box 367, Staatsburg, NY 12580) where his granddaughter, Heather, resides.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Memorial Service will be held during calling hours at 7:30 pm at the funeral home followed by military honors.
