Dr. Sahver “Sunshine” Ozbek, a Poughkeepsie resident since 1974, died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Saturday, April 6, 2013. She was 88.
Daughter of the late Abdulhalim & Mukaddes Kirimman, she was born in Pazarcik, Romania on June 8, 1924. She was orphaned at a young age and was sent by her brothers to Erenkoy Kiz Lisesi boarding school in Turkey. In 1951, she graduated from Capa Istanbul Medical School.
Dr. Kirimman came to the United States in 1954 and became an OBGYN resident in Nashville, TN. In 1958, she married Haki Ozbek in Hastings, Nebraska. She later became a Psychiatrist, and worked in Sioux Falls, SD. After moving with her family to the Hudson Valley, she continued in her practice as a Psychiatrist at the Harlem Valley and Hudson River Psychiatric Centers. She retired in 1999.
She was a member of the Mid-Hudson Islamic Association and Turkish American Medical Association.
Dr, Ozbek is survived by her husband, Haki; her son Cengiz Ozbek ; her daughter, Dr. Aysegul Ozbek & her husband Michael Nahar; her daughter, Hande Ozbek; her grandchildren, Ayla Senay, Stefan Can Nahar, Maya Nahar, Alara Nahar and Sena Nahar; and many other loving relatives & friends.
On April 7, services were held at Masjid Al-Noor in Wappingers Falls and she was laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
