Samuel Calvelli, 74, an area resident for 37 years and formerly of the Bronx, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh.
He was born on January 30, 1936 in the Bronx, the son of John and Marie Calvelli. On June 22, 1958, he married Angela Aparo at the Italian Christian Church in the Bronx.
Sam was very involved in the Italian Christian Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Song Leader, Youth Leader and Board Member. He also served as the Youth Leader for the Northeast Zone of the Christian Churches of North America for several years. In 1964, Sam's father and mother-in-law, Vincent and Rose Aparo, opened the Aparo Bread Crumb Company and with his help established a thriving business that he managed for over 30 years. In 1993, he joined Royal Carting as a driver and then scale master. He thought of Royal Carting as a second family. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Giants and enjoyed traveling and cars.
Sam is survived by his wife, Angela (Aparo) and his three children, Linda J. Calvelli of Tampa, FL, Peter and Martina Calvelli of Bridgewater, NJ and Debra and Gieniu Patora of Salt Point. He adored his seven grandchildren, Nicole and Ryan McMillen, Rachel, Sarah and Daniel Calvelli, and Dylan and Janine Patora. He is also survived by his siblings, Carmela Darretta, Diana Davi, Esther Bongiovanni, Nicholas, Rebecca and Jeremiah Calvelli. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Calvelli. He was a charismatic man who loved people and he was loved by all in return.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction with the funeral service at 5 p.m. The procession will form on Monday at 11:00 am at the funeral home for the interment service at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
