Obituary

Samy Fathy Sapek was born in Cairo, Egypt on November 2, 1940. He was the son of Fathy and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of 6 siblings, with five older sisters (Salwa, Suher, Samia, Sameeha and Salma). He was raised in both Cairo and Rotterdam, Netherlands. He grew up speaking both Arabic and Dutch with his family.

Samy earned a Bachelor's degree from Cairo University before immigrating to the United States in 1969. He worked to establish himself in New York, learning English along the way. He returned to Egypt several times, for the passing of his parents and also to serve in the Egyptian military. He saw active duty operating a tank for his home country in the Arab-Israeli war of 1973.

Samy met the love of his life, Linda DeTore, in February of 1974 while out with friends in Queens. They were married by November of that same year. Although they started their married life in Yonkers, NY, they soon found their forever home in Hopewell Junction. They moved to Hopewell Junction in 1979, where they welcomed their son Sammy in that same year, followed by their daughter Susan in 1983.

Samy was a hard working and determined man, and eventually went on to earn a Masters degree in accounting from Adelphi University, followed by an MBA from St. John's University. He worked as a bank auditor for many years, before deciding to change careers to begin building houses. He enjoyed the independent and hands-on nature of this second career until retirement. In fact, Samy built his family's home in Hopewell Junction that they lived in for over 30 years.

Samy enjoyed watching sports such as soccer and baseball, particularly his favorite team the Yankees. He was a lifelong dog lover, and showed such warmth and happiness with his dog Quill by his side. Samy also loved bringing his family to North Conway, New Hampshire each summer and instilled a love of the area in his children.

Samy and his wife Linda moved to South Carolina in 2020, before returning to the Hudson Valley in 2023 to be closer to their family as his health declined. Samy faced increasing challenges with heart disease and dementia in the last years of his life, but was consistently cared for by his wife and children.

Samy received incredibly compassionate home care support from Hudson Valley Hospice for the final three weeks of his life, and died peacefully at his home in Poughkeepsie on the morning of August 17, 2026. He is survived by his wife Linda, his son Sammy and his daughter Susan, as well as his grandson Jayden and his granddaughter Ayla.

Interment will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, August 21st at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 US-9, Fishkill, NY 12524
