Obituary

Sarah Hopper Harvie, a local area resident for nearly 60 years, died at the Wingate at Beacon on Saturday, July 21, 2012. She was 88.

Born in Leaksville (now Eden), NC on December 30, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Lottie J. Saunders Hopper.

In 1946, she received her degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University and later received her teaching degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Sarah worked as a Librarian for many communities, including libraries in Rockingham County, NC, Fayetville, NC, as well as Virginia Tech University.

On June 9, 1953, she married John B. Harvie, Jr. in Leaksville, NC. Sarah and John then moved to Beacon, where they remained until 1955. At that time, they moved to the Village of Fishkill where they remained. She was predeceased by her husband John on December 23, 1996.

Sarah was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fishkill, where she participated with the Episcopal Church Women. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Garden Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah "Nell" Durland and her husband Robert of Fishkill; her granddaughters, Adrienne, Cassandra and Brianna Durland of Fishkill; also two nieces and three great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, Sarah was also predeceased by her brother James Hopper.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Wingate at Beacon and The Elant at Fishkill; Dr. Kucherov & Staff, especially Nicole; and Irene with Hospice.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 30 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. Funeral services will be private. Sarah will be buried alongside her husband at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
