Obituary

Sister Olga M. Zuniga was born on February 10, 1934 in the country of Honduras. She became acquainted with the Sisters Oblates who administrated the school named "Colegio Sagrado Corazon in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In 1954 she decided to become a religious and entered the Congregation. She was sent to Costa Rica, where the House of Formation was located. In 1962, she made her Perpetual Profession and was sent to work as a teacher in the school owned by the Congregation. In 1964, she was sent back to Honduras to assume the administration of "El Colegio Sagrado Corazon" located in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. That school had almost 1500 students, but Sister Olga did very well as Principal.

In 1978, Sister Olga was transferred to St. Aloysius Novitiate in Hopewell Junction, New York where she participated in the apostolate the Sisters were doing but in 1984, her mother, Mrs. Rubenia Vargas de Zuniga became very ill and Sister Olga was given the permission to go and take care of her. At that time, her mother was already living in California. Sister Olga stayed with her until she died on September 13, 1993.

Sister Olga returned to St. Aloysius Novitiate but in October 1994 she was assigned to go and work in the Hispanic apostolate at St. John Evangelist Parish in Beacon, New York. The Congregation was requested to serve the parish where many parishioners were Hispanic and needed the catechesis for the preparation to the sacraments of initiation and the spiritual formation as Catholic members of the Parish.

In 2001, our Congregation was getting a request from a Parish in Milan, Italy that was opening a convent in 2002. Sister Olga, with other Sisters were sent to Milan, Italy to the Parish "Sant'Angelo". In that parish the Sisters were to take care of the elderly groups that attended the Parish who gathered in a large family room provided by the Pastor. Besides the manual activities done during these gatherings, the Sr. Olga and Sisters gave spiritual direction and retreats. Another apostolate the Sisters did was to visit the houses of those parishioners who were in need of spiritual and material help an do participate in the processions done in the Parish. In 2011 Sister Olga returned to the United States and was transferred to the House of Santisima Trinidad, San Juan, Puerto Rico where she remained until 2016 when she was sent back to New York to Blessed Trinity Convent in the Bronx. By then, she was unable to work in any apostolate. She dedicated her time to prayer, sharing with the Community.

At the beginning of this year, 2025, her health began to decline. She was unable to participate much in the life of the Community and by the middle of March, she began to show signs of her inability to walk by herself or do anything. On March 21st. she was taken to the hospital and then to a rehab center. On March 25th she was sent to the emergency room at Jacobi Hospital, being unable to breathe and with a heart condition. She was blessed to receive the sacrament of Last Rite given by the hospital chaplain. We notified her sister Mrs. Aura Jimenez, the only family survivor who is living in California. The Sisters visited her and prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet as well as the Holy Rosary at her bedside in the emergency room where the doctors confirmed that she was in critical condition with little hope of surviving. In the early hours of the morning of March 26th, she died peacefully in the hospital.

"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die" ( Thomas Campbell). Sr. Olga is no longer physically with us, her spirit lives on in the love, laughter, and memories we share together. And in that sense, Sr. Olga will never be truly gone, for she will live on in our hearts forever.
