LAGRANGEVILLE - Stephen B. Hacker, 79, an area resident for over 42 years, passed away at home on May 10, 2024.
He was born in Mount Vernon on February 9, 1945, and raised in New Rochelle. Stephen was the son of the late Robert and Geraldine (Borden) Hacker. He served over three decades in the automotive industry as a sales manager and fleet manager at local Chevrolet dealers. Later in life, he joined his family helping manage Hacker Oil. He finished his career at IBM in East Fishkill after many years.
Stephen was a member of Temple Israel in New Rochelle, served as an usher, and volunteered for many temple blood drives over the years, wearing his "10-gallon donated" pin, proudly.
In 1982, Steve's family moved to Dutchess County, continuing his community service and volunteering with LaGrange Youth Baseball. He was a board member, coach, and instrumental in improving and expanding the local ballfields. Stephen was also part of the LaGrange Fire Police and a Cub leader with Boy Scouts of America, Troop 82. An avid fan of the New York Yankees, Stephen was also a proud Jewish-American, and staunch supporter of Israel. People gravitated to Steve's outgoing and engaging personality wherever he went, sometimes befriending the occasional stranger with a joke or random historical fact, of which he had many.
Before the advent of social media, Steve was part of the CB community, with his handle, "The Jewish Cowboy". With this basic technology, he socialized, and helped disabled drivers on the "Teaspoon" a.k.a the Taconic State Parkway.
On April 5, 1975, at the Village Lutheran Church in Bronxville, he married Laurel Weiglein, the love of his life. Stephen is survived by Laurel, former wife Barbara Hering; his children and spouses, Debra and Joseph Garbus of Valhalla, Sandra Hacker of Eastchester, Renée and Robert Ward of LaGrange, Bonnie and Patrick Strang of Cortlandt Manor, and Robert and Jenna Hacker of Stafford, VA; his grandchildren, Jack and Samantha Garbus, Alexa and Elizabeth Ward, Kristen, Lucas, and Bryan Strang, and Liam and Peyton Hacker; his cousin, Adam Simkins, who was like a son to him; the extended Weiglein family; and many nieces and nephews
