Stephen A. Modugno, 87, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1979 and formerly of the Bronx, died on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Renaissance Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center.
Born in the Bronx on January 29, 1925, he was the son of Giacomo and Domenica Palladino Modugno. He proudly served our country in the US Army during World War II and was employed as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in the Bronx for 30 years until his retirement in 1980. He was a parishioner of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in LaGrangeville and had coached East Fishkill Girls Softball. He played softball, and enjoyed sports, bowling, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. More than anything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to play cards with his grandchildren and friends.
On June 30, 1946 at St. Luke's Church in the Bronx, Stephen married Bernice Pevonak who predeceased him on November 9, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Betti and her husband, John of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Stephanie and Richard Jackob, John and Laura Betti, Paul Betti, Daniel Betti, Christine and Mike Bunt, and Laura Jeanne Betti; and his great-grandchildren, Timothy, Evan and Luke Jackob, and Madelynn Claire Bunt.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10am at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1925 Route 82, LaGrangeville followed by military honors. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven at the convenience of the family.
